My vote would be neither, but at least VT can keep a coach longer than one year.... Chuckle, chuckle!
Tennessee
Virginia Tech
there's the key word..."currently"
and "currently" VT is blowing UT out of the water
I just wanna see if I can follow your line of logic here...
in order to be an elite program you must:
have won a national title
won some big games (even if those games are in the past)
be consistently mentioned with 5 star recruits on rivals.com
and your head coaching job must be considered a much wanted job
that about sum it up??

So according to the AP we also have to include the following schools in the "elite" column:
Minnesota
TCU
Army
Syracuse
Clemson
Colorado
"They (Miami) told me I wasn't big enough to play running back,'' said Ryan Williams with a snicker. "And they tried to offer me as an athlete or wide receiver."
here is the logic, and im sure most everyone feels this way:
an elite program:
has won a national title in the past 7-8 years.
has won more than one big OOC game.
be consistently mentioned with the highest recruits. yes, that is a sign of an elite program. i dont see how you dont agree with that. its absurd to think a program can be considered elite when they cant land any 4*-5* guys. its true, no matter how much you dont want to admit it.
that is an elite program. a program that wins big games, not just conference games.
and yes, to be an elite program, you HAVE to be able to convince at least some of the big time, 5* guys to come to school there, or even consider them. yep, tis true.
how many national titles or big OOC games have Army, Minnesota, Clemson, Colorado, Syracuse, and TCU won???? ZERO
none of those are elite program, but neither are VT or UT at this moment.
UT is not elite, and with the mess yesterday and today they fell hard, but until that, UT was still a high profile program. im not saying VT isnt a high profile team, but they consistently fail to do big things, they win conference games and beat big east teams, but lose their biggest games.
Biggin, go look at the AP champions since 1936. All of the mentioned schools have won at least 1. So by some peoples criteria that winning the title makes you elite, these teams have to be included.
And I agree that VT isn't an elite program. They are a very good program but must take the next step to elite status. UF, USC, Texas, Bama, OSU, LSU yes. I don't know if VT will/can take that step. But if they can plug a few holes, next year will be their best chance since 99 IMO.
"They (Miami) told me I wasn't big enough to play running back,'' said Ryan Williams with a snicker. "And they tried to offer me as an athlete or wide receiver."
Well it may fit some's definition, but to me, winning a national title in 1942 holds no relevance now. but, if VT's NC game loss counts, UT's title counts, since they were only two years apart.
VT has a great shot next year, they simply cannot afford to let this opportunity pass. if they can beat Boise, they should be able to win the ACC and if they are undefeated, assuming Boise is still ranked in the top 10,and they have another top ten win, they should have a shot at playing in the BCS title game.
and I would say, after the events of the last two days, VT might right now have the better program, until UT gets a coach.
Here are my 'elite' programs right now:
Florida
Alabama
Texas
Ohio State
USC
Oklahoma
LSU
next level down:
Iowa
Oregon
Penn State
VT
Cincinnati
Boise
thank you...for the love of GOD, my argument was never that VT is in the elite status...just that they are very good and trending upward
I've always hated the "we won a national title 6,000 years ago, so we will forever have the better program" argument...it's just silly and doesn't hold any water in (current year)
